Job Description

Job Summary:

We are seeking a responsible, reliable, and professional driver who owns a van or bus to transport students, staff, or community members safely and efficiently. The driver will be responsible for providing their own vehicle, maintaining it in safe operating condition, and ensuring all passengers are transported according to scheduled routes and times.

This position requires strict adherence to safety regulations, excellent customer service skills, and compliance with all local, state, and federal laws related to passenger transportation.

Key Responsibilities:

Safely operate your personally-owned van or bus to transport passengers to and from schools, programs, events, and other destinations.

Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure the vehicle is in proper working condition and meets safety standards.

Maintain all required permits, registrations, and insurance for the vehicle.

Follow assigned routes and schedules while ensuring on-time arrivals and departures.

Ensure passenger safety at all times, assisting individuals with mobility needs as required.

Maintain accurate transportation logs, including mileage, fuel usage, and maintenance records.

Report any incidents, accidents, or mechanical issues immediately.

Keep the vehicle clean, well-maintained, and presentable inside and out.

Comply with all traffic laws, safety protocols, and organizational policies.

Provide professional and courteous service, representing the organization with integrity.

Enforce and model safe practices, including seatbelt use and emergency procedures. Qualifications:

Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).

Experience:

At least 1–2 years of professional driving experience (school, transportation, or community program experience preferred).

Experience transporting youth or vulnerable populations is a strong plus.

Licenses & Certifications Required:

The driver must have and maintain all applicable licenses and certifications, including but not limited to:

Valid State Driver’s License – Class D or equivalent (for vans under 15 passengers).

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) – Required for larger vehicles:

Class B CDL – For buses carrying 16 or more passengers (including driver).

Class C CDL – For smaller vehicles designed for 16 or more passengers but under 26,001 pounds GVWR.

Passenger Endorsement (P) – Required for transporting passengers.

School Bus Endorsement (S) – If transporting school-aged children.

Air Brake Endorsement (if applicable) – If the bus has an air brake system.

Vehicle Requirements (Owner-Operated):

Vehicle must meet all state and local safety and inspection requirements.

Vehicle must have up-to-date registration and insurance, including commercial liability coverage.

Vehicle must be clean, reliable, and suitable for safe passenger transport.

Proof of regular maintenance and inspection records must be provided.

Insurance Requirements:

Driver must carry minimum state-required insurance and commercial auto insurance, which typically includes:

Liability insurance

Collision and comprehensive coverage

Passenger accident coverage (if required by law)

Excellent defensive driving and safety awareness.

Knowledge of local and state traffic laws.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to handle emergency situations calmly and effectively.

Punctual, dependable, and highly professional.

Organized with strong time management skills.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to sit for extended periods while driving.

Ability to assist passengers, including those with mobility challenges.

Good vision and hearing (corrective lenses or hearing aids permitted).

Work Schedule:

Flexible, based on route assignments and program needs.

May include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Compensation:

Contract-based pay, based on mileage, routes, and services provided.

Drivers are independent contractors and responsible for their own vehicle expenses, including fuel, maintenance, insurance, and registration.
