Great Hearts Academies is a growing network of 47 public, open-enrollment, tuition-free schools in San Antonio (TX), Dallas/Ft. Worth (TX), Phoenix (AZ), and Baton Rouge (LA). In addition to our brick/mortar schools we also support several affiliate schools and operate Online academies. Position Summary

The School Director is the primary instructional and cultural leader of the school. As such, he/she must assemble and direct an effective leadership team to:

  • Meet ambitious goals for student achievement.
  • Build a unified, high-performing faculty culture to hire, retain and develop staff.
  • Actively engage families and the community.

The ideal candidate will understand the distinctions and benefits of a liberal arts education, possess a strong understanding of academic rigor and effective instruction, be an outstanding strategic planner as well as a leader who invests in developing faculty and staff.

Bonnie Cone K-6 Curriculum Overview

  • All K-6 students take a rigorous core curriculum including Eureka Math, Core Knowledge Language Arts, History, Science, and Fine Arts.
  • All K-6 students study Foundational Latin, which further enhances their understanding of language structure and grammar.
  • Students are required to wear school uniforms, to profess an honor code, and to participate in a vibrant school culture.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Applies the standard policies and administrative regulations of a Great Hearts Affiliate Academy and those established by the local Board of Directors, in accordance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Interprets the mission and goals of a Great Hearts Affiliate Academy to the students, parents, teachers, and community.
  • Develops, at the direction of the CEO and/or local Board of Directors, policies and procedures for the effective functioning of all aspects of the life of the Academy.
  • With Great Hearts Home Office Staff, advertises for, recruits, interviews and recommends to the Great Hearts and the local board faculty and staff for employment.
  • Supervises and annually evaluates faculty and staff.
  • Assures the adherence of the faculty and staff to the curricular goals and objectives of the Academy and contributes to curriculum development with faculty members and Great Hearts Home Office Staff.
  • Participates in periodic Great Hearts professional development activities with other Heads of School and the faculty of other academies at the direction of Great Hearts.
  • With Great Hearts Home Office Staff, provides for and directs professional development opportunities for the staff.
  • With Great Hearts Home Office Staff, runs an annual orientation program for all teachers.
  • Schedules, attends, and leads faculty meetings, as well as Open House, Curriculum Night and other community meetings.
  • Advertises, recruits, interviews and enrolls students in the school.
  • Provides for the safe and orderly environment of the school by establishing and maintaining standards of conduct.
  • Communicates regularly with the parents and the “community of learners” via a regular newsletter and updated website.
  • Ensures compliance with all Federal and State regulations related to all financial matters, including but not limited to payroll, purchasing and Federal and State filings.
  • Ensures timely reporting of all data and reports to their respective state education agencies and in coordination with Great Hearts staff.
  • Ensures timely reporting and compliance with all stipulations agreed to in the “Charter” and amendments granted to the Academy by the respective state board for charter schools, including but not limited to, instruction in the curriculum, including measurements of achievement of skills and objectives according to the state standards, and meeting the minimum number of days and number of minutes of instruction for each subject; attendance reporting requirements for students; confidential management of student records; building, fire, safety and health code requirements; and Special Education services to exceptional students.
  • Prepares for and attends monthly and specially-convened meetings of the Board of Directors, relevant parent councils, and other professional meetings related to the business of the school.
  • In conjunction with the local Board of Directors and Great Hearts staff, leads the local Community Investment and annual Tax Credit Drive programs.
  • Participates with Great Hearts Leadership and local Board of Directors in an annual evaluation of his/her performance and accomplishments.
  • Other related duties as may, from time to time, be assigned by Great Hearts Leadership or local Board of Directors.

Qualifications, Competencies & Strengths

Education: Master’s degree or above in the liberal arts or a specific academic subject (e.g. history, mathematics, literature, physics, philosophy, classics)

Experience: 3-5 years of experience in School Leadership or Administration

Should possess relevant leadership experience, demonstrable excellence in classroom teaching, and a well-grounded moral vision of the human person. Must be immersed in the principles of classical liberal education. Will have the vision, energy, and communication skills to be a commanding presence in the community and an eloquent spokesperson for the Great Hearts classical, liberal arts mission.

Additional Requirements

Type of clearance: Must pass background clearance according to state regulations.

Physical functions: Requires but is not limited to standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movements, bending, squatting, and reaching. May be required to move or position equipment up to 15 pounds approximately.

Travel required: May need to travel locally to the various academies or to Great Hearts Home Office/Academies as requested.
